The Y has always been there through the good times and the bad supporting the health of the communities we serve and adapting through recessions, fires, floods, and today, a pandemic. In the Okanagan alone, the Y delivered services to over 45,000 people in 2019 and provided over $1 million in financial subsidies and free programming so that low-income families in our communities could access vital services they couldn’t otherwise afford.

It’s been a strange year, but the Engineering Team at KF Aerospace just made it brighter for many isolated and low-income YMCA senior members. Today is World Diabetes Day. Currently, 29% of Canadians are living with diabetes or prediabetes and if this current trend continues it will raise to 33% by 2025. We are proud to partner with Small Steps for Big Changes, a free evidence-based lifestyle program designed to help participants make lasting lifestyle changes to lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This ground-breaking program is making waves in the field of diabetes research. It has been incredible s...eeing the impact it has had on the lives of so many living with prediabetes, including Lois: My life turned upside down about two years ago when I received a startling diagnosis from my doctor I was at serious risk for type 2 diabetes. The marvelous teams from UBC's Small Steps for Big Changes at the Downtown YMCA motivated me and provided me with the necessary encouragement to make me believe in myself again, and continue with the program so that I could get better.
