In the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area - we need to talk about housing, specifically ‘Missing Middle’ housing. It’s become increasingly challenging to find affordable and secure housing in urban spaces and with COVID-19, housing anxiety and insecurity for youth has only increased. The ‘Missing Middle’ represents the gap of affordable housing types between single-detached houses and apartment buildings that have gone ‘missing’ from many cities. How can we rethink and redesi...gn the ‘missing middle’ to better serve youth living in the GTHA? Join us for a webinar on October 8th, 2020 from 12pm EST to 1:30pm EST where we’ll bring together advocacy, policy, urban planning, and construction perspectives for a live design and brainstorming session! After 5 action-packed days, our hackathon is over -- we can't believe it flew by so quickly. After honing their ideas with mentors and working together as a team to create a fully-formed social innovation program, our participants pitched their ideas to an all-star panel of judges and got ready to take their programs to the next level! Over 60% of our attendees told us they wanted to keep building their projects and eventually work to make them a reality in Ottawa-Gatineau, so while the five days are over, we have a feeling that the social change is just beginning. Thanks so much for staying updated with us for the past week -- we can't wait to show you what happens next. And of course, this wouldn't be possible without support from @RBC @ImpactHubOttawa #RBCFutureLaunch

On Day 4, we watched our participants work on making their dreams a reality. After an hour of brainstorming on online whiteboards, we split into groups to come up with concrete ideas for positive change in Ottawa/Gatineau. Once we narrow down the ideas, we'll have some incredible ways for youth to change their communities. We also watched two of our youth participants do a social media takeover and broadcast a day in their life on our instagram stories. It was awesome seeing... how they're mixing quarantined home life with world-changing innovation! It's crazy how fast this week has flown by -- we can't believe tomorrow is the last day of the hackathon. While our official time together is drawing to a close, the impact is just beginning and we can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Thanks so much to @RBC @impactHubOttawa for the support! #RBCFutureLaunch

YouthfulCities' vision for the future is one where cities are built to be as connected, diverse, equitable, and accessible as possible, and we would be remiss if we didn't acknowledge the deep history of racism and anti-black violence that built the cities we call home. This racism is woven into the very structure of urban life -- from housing, to policing, to the job market, to the justice system -- and our work will never be complete until we as a society commit to ending t...he racism that affects every aspect of life here. Racism is alive in Canadian cities and cities around the world. We offer our full, unequivocal support to the Black Lives Matter movement, similar youth lead movements in other cities globally, and to all those fighting for an end to racism. We stand with you in that fight, now and always. Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize inclusion and diversity and increase our efforts to prioritize the unique experiences and struggles of the Black community in our work. Actions need to speak louder. YouthfulCities will continue to add more focus to anti-racism in our urban indexes. We will be actively searching for ways we can use our methods to create new anti-black racism solutions in cities and we will continue to hire, listen and learn from black youth and all youth to make us better. We encourage you to support black charities at https://supportblackcharities.org/ , and if you don't have the resources to give, the revenue from this youtube video support BLM initiatives. https://youtu.be/bCgLa25fDHM

Our hackathon participants got more active than ever in Day 2! With support from @RBC @ImpactHubOttawa, we joined our twenty participants yet again to get into in-depth conversations about mental health, physical health, financial health, and the future of work. After we broke into groups, we regrouped to discuss what we'd learned. All three groups had found remarkable insights about the connectivity between all three types of health and were chock-full of ideas on how to mak...e Ottawa-Gatineau a healthier city! The future leaders got a lot more comfortable with each other and started smiling, laughing, and forming lasting friendships. On Day 3, we regrouped to continue our analysis of financial, mental, and physical health. Our breakout groups created virtual brainstorm boards to express their wildest dreams for the future: from workplaces that prioritize rest to societies that look out for their most vulnerable members, the sky was the limit. Moving forward, we'll nail down some plans for how to make that future a reality. Get ready for our IG takeover tomorrow! #FutureOfUrbanWork #RBCFutureLaunch #ObjectifavenirRBC
