Honk if you're happy! Today's #SimpleJoy comes from Sue who says "Seeing (and hearing!) so many geese fly over our heads and land beside us in the Sagewood Canals makes me smile. Wonderful to witness nature in our city." Thank you for sharing what brings cheer to your day, Sue! Even if the geese like to party all night ... ... Help us keep the happiness rolling in Airdrie and let us know what brings cheer to your day at www.airdrie.ca/simplejoys. Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 31. Stay tuned in January for a special compilation of all the submissions we get from our amazing residents!
Stay off the ice, stay safe! Stormwater facilities, often called stormwater ponds, are not safe for skating or any other winter activity. The surface may look solid, but stormwater flows underneath the surface due to snowfall, snowmelt, road clearing and salting operations. Runoff typically contains concentrations of salt and/or warmed water, which can quickly thin ice surfaces. There also may be sudden water level changes under the ice, resulting in unstable and unsafe conditions. www.airdrie.ca/icesafety
"In 2020 it has never been more clear that we need to help each other at any chance we get. Sometimes the smallest gestures can change the world for someone else," says Airdrie resident Cathy about her #simplejoys submission. Rookie (pictured below) and Cathy are blood donors who take a few minutes out of their day to give blood to those who need it (both dogs and humans)! "This is such a simple gesture for us, but it can mean more days are granted for those who receive it.... This comes with a huge feeling of hope and we are happy to share when needed." THANK YOU Cathy and Rookie for bringing cheer and happiness to Airdrie. Help us keep the happiness rolling in Airdrie and let us know what brings cheer to your day at www.airdrie.ca/simplejoys. Submissions will be accepted until Dec. 31. Stay tuned in January for a special compilation of all the submissions we get from our amazing residents!

The Calgary Metro Region Board (CMRB) completed phase 1 of engagement of the communities surrounding Calgary and Calgary citizens on how we can best work together for future growth. Now we're into phase 2. It's important that Airdrie's voice is represented in this engagement process. Go to www.calgarymetroregion.ca to participate for Airdrie.

GET CART SMART. Stretchy plastic (not crinkly) must be securely bagged. This ensures that the bags are captured in the recycling process and don’t get caught in conveyor belts at the recycling facility. Still not sure what goes where? Visit www.airdrie.ca/cartsmart
2021 Budget deliberations with the Council Budget Committee start today. Did you know? The City budget is broken down into two areas: Capital budget, which is used for replacing assets when they're too old and building new infrastructure and facilities like recreation centres, libraries etc. Operating budget, which covers covers day-to-day expenses. Some typical expenses for the City include services like street cleaning, water services, waste collection and management,... trails, pathways, playgrounds, parks, recreation, public transit, arts and culture, permits, police, fire and municipal enforcement, plus bigger expenses like building and rehabilitation of roads, maintaining indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and more. COVID related revenue loss for 2021 is about $5.55MM and additional COVID expenses are expected to cost the City $574,000. The City of Airdrie continues to operate at much lower costs than comparable midsized cities. Administration has created a budget that keeps expenses low, so that tax increases are minimal and current service levels are maintained. In the proposed 2021 budget, Administration has cut expenses by $3.55 MM and are suggesting that some capital expenses, like the fourth fire hall, be delayed. Watch budget deliberations online at www.airdrie.ca/livecouncil For more information on the 2021 Operating and Capital Budget, visit www.airdrie.ca/budget
