Red trilliums are at their peak in #GatineauPark. If you ever need help identifying this species, carefully take a big whiff. Its odour isn't at all like the sweet perfume you might expect. In fact, the red trillium smells like rotting flesh they are pollinated by flies and have evolved to attract them! Guess who’s staying put this winter (aside from us )? It’s the Mourning Cloak Butterfly! Unlike the monarch, which migrates south, the mourning cloak spends the winter in a state of diapause under the leaves of Gatineau Park until it is barely warm enough to fly. They’re often the first butterflies you’ll see in the spring, sometimes flying over the snow. CLOSED | A section of snowshoeing Trail 63, in the Mackenzie King Estate area, will be temporarily closed. This closure will allow the removal of seven trees around a portion of the trail, as they pose a threat to public safety and NCC infrastructure. Jan. 13 to Jan. 15, 7 am to 4 pm Tree cutting work ... Other healthy, mature and young native trees in the area will be untouched.
