It is with absolute excitement that we congratulate and recognize Homalco’s Sister Nation, Klahoose First Nation, in their recent acquisition of the Klahoose Wilderness Resort in Desolation Sound! Set to open in May of 2021 the resort is BC’s newest Indigenous adventure travel experience. Welcoming visitors to our territory and home brings opportunities and strengthens our Nation’s framework of modern life and aligns with our community vision for the future, says Chief Kev...in Peacey. We invest in tourism to have a bigger role in the management of our territory and to protect the environment with our sustainable tourism practices. We care deeply and also want to contribute to the recovery of BC and the Canadian tourism economy, added Chief Peacey. These forms of investments offer community economic development and growth while moving forward positively through awareness and sustainability of the precious environment that surrounds us. We are proud of our Sister Nation and what this means for First Nation communities within BC. We wish for plentiful success for Klahoose Wilderness Resort’s operation in 2021 and beyond! The ancient wooly dog, also known as the West Coast Wool Dog, dates back 3,000 years and was bred by coastal Indigenous peoples for its long, soft hair. This breed of dog would be shorn with sharpened mussel shells two or three times a year and its ‘wool’ would be spun and woven into textiles used for clothing, blankets and mats. We raise our hands to the 100 crew members, tour operators and First Nations involved in this heroic ocean clean up We thought we’d do 20 to 30 tonnes, said Smith. In the end we got 127 tonnes of marine debris off the coast and out of the ocean. We had no idea when we started how much there was out there, said Smith. There’s so much more to do, so much more coastline to do. Coastal Cleanup Wilderness Tourism Association
