Wisdom Wednesday! Today we are looking at an eye disease by the name of Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60. At each visit your technician or optometrist will measure the pressures in your eye. Historically it was done by a small puff of a...ir to the eye. Due to COVID-19 optometry office’s needed to look for an alternative as the puff of air was deemed an aerosol in the COVID environment. At Old South Optometry we decided to introduce the iCare tonometer which uses rebound technology to measure the inter-ocular pressure in the eye. Age-related means that it often happens in older people. Macular means it affects a part of your eye called the macula. AMD is a common condition it’s a leading cause of vision loss for people age 50 and older. AMD doesn’t cause complete blindness, but losing your central vision can make it harder to see f...aces, drive, or do close-up work like cooking or fixing things around the house. AMD happens very slowly in some people. Even if you have early AMD, you may not experience vision loss for a long time.
