Outdoor Skills And Thrills 03.02.2021

Today the sun is shining strong and there's barely any wind, it's one of those days when -40 actually feels kinda nice with the proper layers on Normally in NW Ontario we get like 2 months of -20 to -40 as the highs, but this year we have certainly been spoiled with temps usually not going below -10 all winter. Let's see what the next month and a half will bring of Chris Chapman by Aric Fishman

Think warm thoughts Thankfully it's just 1 week of this brutal cold, then it's back to bein' mild and wild Compiling the info of all the sweet new boulder problems and areas I had the pleasure to develop last rock season with friends or alone. I'm thinking [very] soon there will be enough areas and problems established to start hammering out a legit bouldering guidebook for the region ... You can submit any new route info on my website in the main menu under Explore Mo...re > New Routes & Updates. by Aric Fishman (@outdoor_skills) of Paul Desaulniers (@paul_rdes) working an unfinished proj at Claghorn See more

The second big hunk of ice we climbed yesterday. 55 meters of multiple fun & exciting lines were enjoyed on Glace Éclatante (translation: Exploding Ice) by Chris and I at the Orient Bay Palisades Unfortunately though it doesn't look like I'll be able to run any guided outings for at least 2 weeks with the lockdown starting this Saturday Be diligent, be responsible, wash your hands frequently.... by Aric Fishman (@outdoor_skills) See more

Did you know there are big granite boulders in the town of Lappe, just a 30 minute drive from Thunder Bay??...in a region with primarily diabase as the rock type, big granite boulders are a real treat to play on so close to home! This boulder field is unfortunately hidden on a buddy's parents' property that they'd like to keep private...but after sampling the quality of the rock there and seeing what lies just out of sight in the forest, I'm convinced there must be more big... fields of granite boulders with primo landings around I love Northwest Ontario, always filled with wicked surprises! by GoPro on timelapse mode of me (@outdoor_skills) getting after some fresh granite problems See more

Ahhhhhhhhh! Another amazing day.

This summer I ventured up a couple new chimney climbs at Claghorn that ended up being preeeetty wicked One of which was a real tight chimney I bolted on lead and called 'Modern Day Explorer' going at around 5.10 something, and this wide one pictured here which ended up taking all gear placements at around 5.8 +extra loose blocks sketch-factor..I named 'The Art of Discovery'. Around this region going up untouched lines ground up onsight usually means lots of moss, and lots... of choss... So not really something I would recommend to just anyone because of the high risk associated with loose rock. Shout out to Harris for putting up with (and encouraging) my ground-up chossaneering escapades I'll def clean those climbs up next rock season though and share them with everyone since they're real treats that should be repeated. by my GoPro setup on timelapse, of me (@outdoor_skills) half way up the FA/FFA of 'The Art of Discovery' - 5.8ish See more
