Have you had the pleasure of meeting our wonderful volunteer Catherine? Since joining our driving team in May, shes been busy delivering needed hampers of food..., PPE, and toiletries to older people across #yeg. Were lucky to have her aboard, and are continually impressed by her commitment to helping vulnerable people in Edmonton. As someone who likes being behind the wheel, volunteering with Drive Happiness has been a great way for Catherine to help alleviate pandemic-related challenges in her community. Her role has also highlighted the importance of leaving judgement behind. A quick glance doesnt tell you about other peoples realities, you dont know what theyre dealing with. What were doing here is contributing in a small way to help address those realities. Catherine is well aware of the profound difference volunteering can make in someones life. Shes been a tutor with PALS - Project Adult Literacy Society for over eight years, helping to improve speaking and literacy, and has volunteered her time in a similar role for individuals who are incarcerated. Shes also gotten involved with a youth justice organization, which advocates for alternative sentencing programs. Catherine has lived in Edmonton for 19 years, and when shes not volunteering, she has plenty of other projects on the go! She owns her own business, which offers career services and workshops in leadership, management, and communication skills. She also loves to read, walk, and sing in her choir. People like Catherine are at the heart of what we do. Interested in becoming a volunteer driver? https://drivehappiness.ca/volunteering/

The Family Literacy Carnival was a great success and tremendous fun. Everyone left with a free book to celebrate the value of literacy. Especially liked when Sarah Chan (one of the Guest Readers) mentioned that our brains Sparkle when we read! They definitely do.
