""A lot of the streams we saw fish return to are streams where there has been a lot of restoration work unfold over the last number of years. So to see salmon return in decent numbers is incredibly exciting," said Angelo."

"In a recent letter to Delta’s mayor and council, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, noting the findings of an independent review panel, wrote that despite the potential economic benefits the Terminal 2 project in Delta may offer, Richmond is concerned with the report’s findings which list numerous potential significant adverse environmental and human effects."

"A key component of monitoring programs is the ability to identify individual bears using a set of genetic markers that, when combined, provide a unique ‘genetic fingerprint’ for each bear. However, the genetic markers that are currently being used are outdated, costly, and do not provide any additional information beyond individual identification."

BREAKING GOOD NEWS! We have now raised the funds required to buy the Kitlope hunting tenure. You’ve helped us to permanently end commercial trophy hunting in the spectacular Kitlope Conservancy and surrounding area. We owe a huge thanks to you, all of our donors, and everyone who has helped us to raise the $650,000 required. Thank you.

"Unlike six other provinces, B.C. has no endangered species legislation, which allows species at risk to be killed outside of protected areas."

"The provincial government reports that hunters kill, on average, 20 wolves per year on Vancouver Island, while trappers take another seven. Those kills are not enough to jeopardize the population, but it underscores a troubling attitude to predators, says Chris Darimont, a professor at the University of Victoria, and a science director for the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. This is not an issue of the population’s numerical sustainability, it’s an ethical issue. I think it’s wrong to kill something with no intention of eating it. Let’s face it, it’s pretty gross behavior and it casts all hunters in a bad light, he says."

"Even when we’re isolating, our wild protected areas continue to provide us with essential services, 24/7. Not only do they provide clean water and air and influence our marine and terrestrial food supplies, but they work constantly to mitigate the effects of climate change, removing carbon from the atmosphere and providing opportunities for plants and animals to find livable habitats."

All predators on the British Columbia coast need our protection. You can help end commercial trophy hunting in the Kitlope Conservancy and surrounding area forever. We need $100,000 to buy out Kitlope's hunting tenure, which would mean the end of commercial trophy hunting in over 5,300 square kilometres of priceless temperate rainforest. Not only will your donation help save the lives of bears, wolverines and wolves like the ones you see in this video it will be matched by ...donors as passionate about preserving the natural world as you are, doubling your impact. Donate here: https://www.raincoast.org/great-bears/donate/

Covered in this Times Colonist opinion editorial, Raincoast's recommendations to Island's Trust Council are that they use their powers to protect the remnants of Coastal Douglas fir ecosystems through the following actions: [Share if you agree] 1. Pursue development permit areas to protect forest ecosystems and regulate forest practices on private lands. 2. Seek enforceability of development permits.... 3. Pursue the implementation of tree-cutting permits and forest management regulations. 4. Explore options for using zoning (i.e. conservation zoning) as an approach to regulating tree removal and retention on private lands. 5. Prioritize the use of the current tools available for preserving and protecting the Trust area and its unique amenities and environment, such as conservation covenants. 6. Amend the Trust Policy Statement to reflect the dual obligation of local trustees, and the wider trust federation, to uphold the trust’s object.

Most people and I’m talking about 90 per cent, or north of that in British Columbia are opposed to sport and trophy hunting of carnivores, said Chris Darimont, science director of Raincoast Conservation Foundation and professor at the University of Victoria.

"I cannot confirm from our CWR observations, but there are several reliable observers who took photographs of a whale that looked very pregnant, and one of our trained ID specialists agrees that the photos are of J46. The photos that I have seen are off-angle and I trust our ID specialists and the original observers that reported to Orcanetwork are correct," said Balcomb.

This field work is as social as it is ecological. Living and working in the Atnarko exposes us to dynamic and rich knowledge sharing from people who live and work among bears, including commercial operators and members from the Commercial Bear Viewing Association of BC. Our research program also benefits from having Nuxalk youth on our crew this year, newly graduated from the Supporting Emerging Aboriginal Stewards program, and now employed by Nuxalk Fisheries and Wildlife Department. While I am guided by scientific inquiry, I carry out this work by operating in ways I have learned from people who live and work here. I practice carrying myself slowly, thoughtfully, respectfully, and with gratitude while working alongside grizzlies and people who call this place home.

We are so close to raising the funds needed to purchase the Kitlope commercial hunting tenure. This is how we stop hunting of large carnivores in the Great Bear Rainforest. We’ve already protected approximately 33,500km2, and the Kitlope would be another 5300km2. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for an exciting announcement! In the meantime, help us reach our goal of $650,000 by donating: https://www.raincoast.org/great-bears/
