For anyone in need, here is the email I sent out to all the contacts listed in previous post detailing my needs and desires going forward. Good evening, My name... is Ariana Scarcello and I am a Tattoo Studio owner located in Woodbridge Ontario. Our sector has been deeply affected by the Covid-19 non-essential closures, as I am sure many others have been. What makes us unique in relation to other industries are two elements. 1) Our sector is made up primarily of independent contractors. By way of sole proprietors and those we employ. This business model renders us ineligible for the government aide put forward to date as we lack the traditional payroll required to participate in the CEBA and CEWS. Ahead of the CECRA roll out and June 1st and business expenses, we are trying to survive under deplorable stress. I have been in touch with peers and colleagues within our sector and do not know of one landlord who intends to participate. The CECRA has been polled to be the integral initiative that could mean the difference between financial security to reopen when allowed, vs permanent closure of our businesses. 2) Tattoo and Piercing studios have been operating under strict sterilization protocols and cross contamination prevention regimens for decades as mandated by public health. We wear PPE and are adept at working in an environment where contracting communicable illnesses is a risk we have worked our entire careers to prevent. For our own safety and that of our patrons. Most tattoo studios continued to operate with an even further cleaning regimen to combat Covid-19 prior to the provincially set closures March 24. A worrisome trend has become apparent across Canada with regards to the slow reopening of the economy, whereby some personal services such as hairstyling and barbering have been allowed back to work. Even though Tattooing is categorized under the same Personal Service sector, we are seemingly being set further down the line to reopen, if given timelines at all. Hair stylists and barbers do not operate under the strict protocols we do for sterilization and typically would see double the amount of clients daily. Both industries operate within the same proximities to our clients. In some cases hair services even closer when proving services such as shaves, line-ups, bang trimming etc that works directly against the face. The Tattooing sector has no voice. No one is advocating for us. We realize the stereotypes associated with the industry. However, we are no less business owners, employees or families; all in need. We require viable rent relief to be able to stay closed the severely prolonged amount of time the government wants. Not the option for landlords to apply or not. I assure you, they are not interested. Otherwise, we need to return to work. We are prepared to implement immediate and drastic changes to our environment to ensure the safest possible service provision for our staff, patrons and community. Working at a 50% capacity, staggering staff, full PPE for staff and disposable masks for clients, medical grade sterilization of the studio that includes every surface, plexiglass sneeze guards at the front desk, alcohol based gel hand sanitizers, discontinuation of any services that would be applied to the face, health and wellness checks for all clients, travel vs service restrictions and much more. We are open to even further restriction just to be able to operate. We are better equipped than majority, to operate safely during the current climate. Our industry has come together to advocate because we have been forgotten. We are risk of an entire sector being completely abolished if there isnt give in either of these areas. Either effective rent control or a return to work strategy plan keeping in line with hair and other personal services. We pay our taxes. We employ thousands based out of hundreds of Ontario studios. Please, we implore you to take this information into account when moving forward with the economic reopening and CECRA delivery. We are in desperate need of help, one way or another. If we can be part of the solution and assist in any preparedness planning, please do not hesitate to be in touch! We hope you and your family are keeping well and safe.
