No, acupuncture doesn't usually "hurt". We use very thin strong stainless steel needles that are also sterile and one-time use only. Most of the time there is very little sensation when a needle is inserted. However, the acupuncture points are small energy centres and when the needle goes in, sometimes there is a sensation known as "de qi" in Chinese Medicine. This basically means "the feeling of qi moving". The best translation we have for "qi" is "life energy" and some...times when it moves it can feel like a little zap, twinge or achy feeling. This is a short-lived sensation, and when all the needles are inserted the patient gets to relax and rest for 20-30 minutes while the needles do their work. What can we treat with acupuncture? Tinctures are liquid extracts made from herbs that you take orally (by mouth). They are usually extracted in alcohol, but they can also be extracted in vegetable glycerine or apple cider vinegar (non-alcohol). Tinctures are easy and convenient to use. Because they are taken directly under the tongue, they enter the bloodstream much more quickly and directly than by any other means. This means that the action in the body is usually quicker. Although some herbs will have an immediate effect, such as those used to help one relax, others that are more nutritive and building in nature may take several weeks of continual use before best results are seen (much like a multi-vitamin).

Calling all parents! Back to school means the start of cold and flu season, every year. This year we have adopted new habits such as wearing masks, physical distancing and hand washing. These practices are meant to protect our kids from Covid 19 and the bonus is that they also help to prevent transmission of the age-old corona viruses that cause the "common cold". Let me be clear; Covid 19 is new and we do not claim or guarantee that any Naturopathic intervention can prevent... or treat this infection. However, the common cold has been around for a very long time and we have effective strategies to support the immune system and assist with warding off these well known viruses. My kids will be taking HMF Fit for School which packs probiotics, Vitamin D and Vitamin C into one yummy chewable tablet that they are happy to self-administer. Weve just started using zinc lozenges as well, which taste great but please use with caution! High doses of zinc taken on an empty stomach can cause nausea and even vomiting. My 4 year old and 7 year old are only allowed to have half a tablet and only after a substantial meal. Herbal tinctures can be a great way to keep the immune system strong as well. Deep Immune for kids is effective and well tolerated. It can be mixed with applesauce for kids who are fussy about taste. These are simply some of the strategies my family uses during cold and flu season, alongside hand washing, healthy eating and prioritizing sleep. Heres a simple guide to help with your decision making. Every year the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes an updated list of fruits and vegetables which contain elevated levels of pesticides. This list is known as the dirty dozen and EWG recommends eating organic versions of these fruits and vegetables. Additionally, EWG publishes an updated list of produce which contain low pesticide residues, known as the clean fifteen. When selecting organic produce, its important to look for the USDA organic seal. The USDA has developed strict rules and regulations to govern organic foods. This means that a product with this seal cant be genetically modified and must be grown in soil free from synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. If affordability is of concern, a smart alternative is to search for frozen varieties. Frozen organic foods are typically less expensive than fresh organic foods. An additional bonus with frozen produce is that it of course lasts longer, but it may also be more nutritious depending on when it was frozen. See more
