Lest we forget. May we always remember the men and women who fought for us and gave us freedom

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tanya Maria Sumka, on October 30th, 2020 after complications during her heart transplant. Tanya was a proud founding member of the Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and will be dearly missed. Please send your thoughts, prayers and love to her children, Victor and Ivanna Sumka, and husband Taras Sumka. As well as anyone who was close to her. We would like to express our deepest sympathy to all of you who h...ad the privilege of knowing her, dancing with her, or who grew up with her. If you are left wondering what you can do to help Tanya's family, her husband has requested that in lieu of flowers please donate to the educational trust fund set up for their children. Tanya would be forever grateful that we had come together to support her biggest pride and joy. The link to the Go Fund Me is below. The Vyshyvanka has been a sacred emblem of Uk...rainian culture, tradition and history since ancient times. On Vyshyvanka Day, Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine around the world wear a Ukrainian embroidered shirt to show their support for the Ukrainian people and as a symbol of unity, dignity and love. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and Russia’s illegal occupation of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine, Vyshyvanka Day has also been an important reminder of the struggle of the Ukrainian people in defence of their sovereignty. Vyshyvanka Day is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to Ukraine’s freedom, democracy and independence. INSTRUCTIONS 1) Take a photo of yourself wearing your Vyshyvanka 2) On Thursday, May 21, post it on your social media pages with #VyshyvankaCanada2020 hashtag 3) Send your photo to UCC at [email protected] by end of day on Friday, May 15 and become part of our huge map of Canada formed with the photos from Ukrainian communities from coast to coast to coast!
