Without the support and generosity of our community, happy stories like Isen, Uno, and Lily's would not be possible. Your gifts saved them, and now we need YOUR help to save the next animal who comes to us in need. Please consider a tax-deductible charitable donation to wrap up 2020 on a positive note. Some days in an animal shelter make your heart sing. And other days can break your heart. The day that Dame Judy Dench arrived was definitely one of the latter. This sweet old girl was found as a stray in very poor condition. Sadly, her medical screening and scans uncovered some terrible findings. Her poor body was riddled with cancer, and she had only a short time to live. Fortunately, we have some super-special volunteers who are willing to take foster animals for "fo...spice" (think foster combined with hospice). They took Dame Judy into their home, named her, and gave her all the love, care and treats they possibly could to let her enjoy whatever quality time she had remaining. And they worked closely with our medical team to ensure that when she was ready she was able to peacefully cross the rainbow bridge. We want to send a big thank you all our foster and fospice volunteers who open their homes and hearts to pets in need. #sometimeshappyendingsonlylastashorttime #amazingvolunteers See more

The very BEST thing you can do to make an outdoor cat's life better is to get them spayed or neutered, and the Humane Society can help! Learn more here https://windsorhumane.org/tnr.

UPDATE - Ellie and Snoopy are adopted! "Hi there... I'm Ellie and this big fella is my brother Snoopy. We have been together since he was a puppy, he grew up always having me by his side. For the last 8 years we have really relied on one another...from the day the little guy came home we have never been apart! Sure, I wasn't thrilled when he first showed up. But I quickly learned to love him and to be honest it is nice having your own personal bodyguard always watching y...our back! Not that big old Snoopy would be much a threat to anyone...but it still takes the eyes off me seeing as I'm a bit on the shy side. I'm sure you are all wondering how we found ourselves here at the shelter at our age... well for the past couple years we could tell something was wrong with our person. He started having more and more people over and was spending more and more time in his bed. We tried our best to comfort him and he loved us dearly but no matter what we did we just couldn't make him better...We both found it odd how all the people coming in our home had the same name...'Nurse'. Snoopy and I talked about it and we still have yet to figure that out... But the nurse people were all very very nice and took good care of us and our person. One day though...our person went to sleep but never woke up no matter how much we nudged him... A nice lady told us that our person went to a place called the Rainbow Bridge, and is waiting for us there. She said that he wants us to have a good life here while he's getting settled in there. She brought us here because she knew that was the best way to find us the perfect home together. We are hoping for a somewhat quiet home since that is what we are used to and a fenced yard would be awesome! If you could love me and my brother Snoopy for the rest of our lives then please fill out an application to adopt us!" Snoopy and Ellie are a bonded pair, and MUST be adopted together. To apply to adopt them please visit: https://windsorhumane.org/dogs-puppies

These guys and their friends were made homeless recently after the Town of Leamington passed a bylaw preventing urban residents from having them. Even though their owners had them for several years before that, they had to find places for them quickly so we have eight pigeons currently available for adoption. If you're looking for pet pigeons to add to your flock please visit http://windsorhumane.org//adoptab/adoptable-animals-other/.

Tippy and Toddy are definitely best buds! That's why when they came to us after their owner became too ill to care for them we required that they find a home together. They're part of our #AdoptASeniorPetMonth promo, so if you adopt them before the end of November you can take this handsome pair home for FREE! To learn more about them or to apply to adopt them, visit http://windsorhumane.org//adoptabl/adoptable-animals-cats/. Remember, in honour of Adopt A Senior Pet Month all senior cats (over 8 years old) can be adopted for free for the entire month of November! #adoptmeplease #seniorpetsrocks

We try to not judge why people make some of the very bad decisions they do. But sometimes it's hard... Like when 21 friendly rats are found huddled in a pile in a park in the bitter cold. Fortunately, a caring family happened to come across them, and carefully managed to get them all into a box and brought them safely to the Humane Society. Awesome people like that almost make up for the less awesome people who left them there... Many of these ratties are now ready to start their new life! We want to make sure that no one is expecting, so currently it's mostly males who are looking for homes. Check them (and lots of other small animal friends) out and apply to adopt here: https://windsorhumane.org/small-animals #savinglives #adoptmeplease

Every year the BRT Neighbourhood decides on a charity project for the holidays, and this year they decided to help out our community's animals. They purchased LOTS of needed items off our wish list (http://windsorhumane.org/about-us/support-us/wish-list/) and Faith and Andrea came by today to drop them off. Before they did...Faith's dog Ozzie did quality control.

John Purrving was found with a serious injury to his tail. Who knows what happened...maybe he was nicked by a car, maybe another animal got him, or maybe it got stuck somewhere...but whatever it was his tail was causing him nothing but distress. So today the end of his tail was removed, and now he's ready to start his second life! And remember, cats get 9 lives so he's still got plenty to spare! Apply here to make him part of your family: http://survey.constantcontact.com//a07eh6hj5rikc4ycc/start #adoptmeplease

Monday morning smile! "Izzy is settling in really good. She is very affectionate, your team obviously took excellent care of her. She is a special blessing to us. I wanted to mention, Lauren the adoption expert was wonderful and the young lady that helped us when we came in was wonderful as well. Thank you very much for allowing this adoption. I love her."

Our first-ever barn cats only spay and neuter event last month was a huge success! We had lots of people ask us when we're going to do it again, so we're trying to assess the need for spay and neuter for barn cats and determine the best way to get all these farm cats fixed. If you have a farm cat(s), please email [email protected] with your full name, address, phone number, and number of cats (if you know genders we would like to know that too but it's not essential). We will follow up with you about next steps.

Just add love! When Daisy first arrived at the Humane Society, she was in terrible shape. Her skin was raw and irritated, and she was missing fur over much of her body. But our medical team and her wonderful foster (now forever!) mama gave her lots of TLC, and turned her life around. She's now happy, healthy, and LOVED! #happyendings

In June 2019, the Windsor/ Essex County Humane Society launched the Rex’s Legacy program to help individuals receiving support from the Ontario Disability Support Program. The program helps qualified pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered. Recently, the program was temporarily expanded to assist individuals who have experienced job loss due to Covid to receive wellness care for their dogs and cats, thanks to a generous donation for that purpose. On November 14, 2...3 cats and dogs were able to receive needed wellness care (vaccines, microchips, parasite prevention, and spay/neuter in some cases) for only a nominal cost to their caregivers. To help continue this program, please donate online at http://windsorhumane.org/donate-now-2/. To apply for the Covid grant program, please visit http://windsorhumane.org/covid-19-assistance-program/.

UPDATE - We received 108 applications for these dogs! We have reached out to potential adopters and are in the process of adoption counselling to try to ensure that they're a good fit for each other. We will be keeping the applications of everyone who applied on file - if you see another dog available in the next 60 days that you would like to be considered for please email [email protected]. No need to fill in the entire form again! Three of our new friends from ...all the way in Manitoba are ready to find their new homes! Learn more about them and apply to adopt here: http://windsorhumane.org//adoptabl/adoptable-animals-dogs/. Due to the anticipated demand to adopt these dogs we will be accepting applications until 8am Thursday October 15. We know that there will be more applications than dogs available but we are trying to give everyone a fair opportunity to apply. We will then choose applications at random, and begin standard screening to try to ensure that the home is a good fit for the dog. #rescueroadtrip #adopmeplease

We knew when we took dogs in from remote northern communities in Manitoba that one of the big reasons that they need help is because of the lack of available preventative veterinary care. And that lack of care quickly hit home as our medical team started assessing our new arrivals. Sadly, three of them are infected with heartworm and will have to endure a dangerous and uncomfortable series of treatments to rid of them of the parasites. Please consider helping them on their continued journey to a new life: https://bit.ly/3d3ISoc #rescueroadtrip #savinglives #heartwormsucks

Goomba was a hot mess when he arrived at the Humane Society back in February. He was having trouble walking, his eye needed surgery, he had been shot with a BB gun, and he had a whole bunch of other problems. Over the months since then, he had a surgery on his eye and another surgery to remove the BB pellet, he had a complicated experimental treatment on his paws, and he got LOTS of other veterinary care while spending months in a foster home. Though it all, Goomba was a h...uge love bug who wanted to soak up all the attention he could get. Potential adopters considered taking him home, but his lengthy medical history deterred them, and time after time he was passed by. But finally, his new mama Bryanna decided to make him part of her home. And she tells us he's fitting in well, and already part of the family! Thank you Bryanna for giving this special guy a great home! #happyendings #savinglives #thanksgiving

Remember, not all Thanksgiving treats are good for our furry friends! Some foods are toxic to pets in even small amounts, and too much rich food can cause serious stomach issues leading to an evening in the pet ER. A few better options for holiday pet treating (in small quantities): Cooked turkey breast Sweet potatoes... Plain pumpkin Green beans Carrots Apples Cooked salmon See more

Willy's Thanksgiving list 1) I'm thankful for the person who found me and my brothers and sisters when we were having a very rough time. 2) I'm thankful for my foster mama who gave us medicine and lots of love. 3) I'm thankful that all my brothers and sisters found homes.... 4) I'm thankful that cats have great ears and noses, so even kittens like me whose eyes don't work can get around just fine. 5) I'm thankful for my duckie friend who I can play and cuddle with. I hope that I can soon also be thankful for a fur-ever home of my very own! To apply to adopt me please go to: http://survey.constantcontact.com//a07eh6hj5rikc4ycc/start

#rescueroadtrip #savinglives Our Thanksgiving rescue road trip just arrived with precious cargo on board! Originally from northern Manitoba, these dogs were transported by our caring rescue partners to Sudbury where two of our pawsome team members Christie and Jasmyne picked them up and drove them all the way back here to Windsor. Why did they need to make SUCH a long trip to find their home? Well, in many parts of northern Canada there is very limited access to veterinary... care, which means that spay and neuter is uncommon. And as a result, there are more dogs being born than there are homes for in those communities. We want to allow our new friends some time to relax and decompress from their journey, and they also need to be fully be vetted by our medical team and assessed by our behaviour team so that we can determine what kind of household they would thrive best in. We anticipate it will be at least a week or two before most of these dogs will be ready for adoption. We will update everyone on our Facebook page and web site (http://windsorhumane.org//adoptabl/adoptable-animals-dogs/ ) when they start to become available. Disclaimer #1 - Because of the amount of interest in adopting, we are not able to keep a waiting list. Please keep an eye on our adoption page and if you see a dog you’re interested in become available submit an application. Disclaimer #2 We know that you want to come meet these guys, but they have had a LOT going on in the past week and they need some time to adjust. Our team will be giving them plenty of attention and TLC. Disclaimer #3 Yes, the puppies are adorable and we know that you want them. But they will take an even longer time than the adults to be ready for adoption.

Windsor/Essex County Humane Society 29.05.2020

And they’re off! Two of our dedicated team members have started their 722km #rescueroadtrip to save dogs from Manitoba! They’ll be meeting the dogs tomorrow in Sudbury, and then making the drive back to Windsor with somewhere between 15 to 20 dogs on board. Keep an eye on our page tomorrow night - we plan to go live on Facebook as the dogs are coming in, so you can get a sneak peak at our new friends! This journey wouldn't have been possible without the support of our wonderful community. The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society cares for thousands of animals every year, something that is only possible because of your generous donations. Tiny Tim is ready for his fur-ever home! There has been a lot of interest in adopting this brave little guy, so we will be accepting applications for him until Thursday morning at 8am. We will then choose one at random to start our standard adoption screening. And we hope everyone else will decide to adopt one of the other wonderful kittens we have also looking for homes! #adoptmeplease

Windsor/Essex County Humane Society 13.05.2020

Just a few days ago the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society received an urgent plea. A large group of dogs from all the way in northern Manitoba needed new homes, and they needed them fast! Knowing that we had the ability to help these animals, we jumped into action and agreed to be part of giving these dogs new lives. On Thanksgiving weekend, two of our dedicated team members will be making the long drive to Sudbury and back to rescue approximately 15-20 dogs and bring them... back to Windsor. Between the truck rental to transport that number of dogs, costs of the journey, and the care that these dogs will need after they arrive, our bills are quickly adding up. But you can help us save these dogs. Your gift will make this rescue possible, and help give animals in urgent need a second chance. It is only because of loyal animal lovers like you that we are able to rescue these dogs, and all of the other animals in our care. Your donation puts food in their bellies, provides health exams and vaccinations to keep them safe from disease, and ensures they have a warm blanket to sleep on and a secure roof over their heads here at the Humane Society until they find their forever homes. Without your support, the life-saving care we are providing to these dogs - and to thousands of other animals every year - would not be possible! Follow the link below to donate now! https://bit.ly/3d3ISoc #rescueroadtrip #thanksgiving #savinglives
